I am a grocery shopper.  Grocery shopping isn’t something that actually bothers me like it does most people. Grocery shopping is an activity that I find somewhat therapeutic as it offers some personal time, albeit surrounded by a number of strangers.  And at the end of grocery shopping when I’ve unloaded my brown paper bags from my car into my kitchen, I experience a sense of achievement.  One more item off my to-do list for the week!

Something that both my fiance and I fail at, is doing anything with our groceries.  We are the types to buy frozen and fresh, but when given the option, we opt for frozen because it’s quick and easy.  Meanwhile, our fresh fruits and veggies, dairy, and meat are left to wilt away in the fridge and freezer, unused, and end up in the garbage–what a waste!

I kept hearing a ton of buzz about Blue Apron from my friends and coworkers.

“I am making Chicken Enchiladas tonight!”.

“We are having shrimp scampi and some other fancy side dish! (I can’t recall the exact side dish).

And of course all I can think, and then ask… “But is it easy to make?”  “Does it take a lot of prep?” “Are there a lot of dishes at the end?”

I kept hearing such positive feedback that I thought, why not give it a try?  So, I did! And because I was so apprehensive and on the fence about spending $60 for 3 meals, I decided to document my Blue Apron journey so that my insight and experience can be used as help and guidance for lost people like myself when deciding if it is a good idea.

Here it goes!

Step 1)  Blue Apron Review – Pick your plan

You can select a service for 2 or 4 people for 2, 3, or 4 meals.  For 2 people you only get the option of 3 meals, but for the family plan you can choose 2 or 4.  As a couple, we chose 2, but if you are a family of 3 or more, I would imagine you would want to select for 4.BA Pick Your Plan

Step 2) Select your dietary preference and the day of the week you would like to receive your meals.

Blue Apron Review Tip: I prefer having my Blue Apron delivered on Tuesday because then I can plan to have meals for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  I usually go out for meals on Friday.

This part/option(s) is also good for individuals who have dietary restrictions or preferences.

You can select if you are vegetarian, and then also have the option to remove any kinds of meats that you do not want to be sent in your meal recipes (see image below).

Step 3)  Enter your payment Information and Address!  You don’t need a screenshot for this.

Moving on…

Something else that I really like and think is cool, is you can view your schedule of meals.  If you don’t like the meals that are coming your way, you can change them!

Step 4)  Voila!

Your box of Blue Apron goodness has arrived!

Step 5)  Blue Apron Review – The unboxing!

The box was completely fine upon arrival.  Nothing was damaged or spilled — I almost expected it though, so to my surprise, everything was in good shape.

As soon as you open the box you are greeted by a Blue Apron recipe book that holds all 3 recipes for the week.  Each page is detachable, so you can detach the recipe you are using, when you are using it.  You can even save them!

Tip: If you really like a recipe, create a binder or folder, and add each recipe card that you like to it.  That way, you can have it for future uses when you want to cook it again.

Underneath the recipe book, you will find (pictured below) all of your fruits, veggies, and little brown paper bags that contain “knick knacks” and are labeled for their respective meals.  The knick knacks are usually dry ingredients or flavor-adds.  For instance, butter, parmesan cheese, spices, etc.

Beneath all of your veggies and other knick knacks (pictured above), you will find a layer of cardboard, if I remember correctly, then all of your meat(s) sitting on a bed of ice. (pictured below)

At first I was concerned that the meat wouldn’t be cold enough and that it may have gone bad.  I am paranoid.  But everything was perfectly cold and the temperature that I would keep in my own fridge or freezer.

Blue Apron Meat

When unboxing my Blue Apron meals, I was a little surprised to find that everything was thrown in a bit willy-nilly.  The meat and veggies were separated, but, and this is lazy’ol me talking, I had to go through each recipe and separate all of the veggies, meats, and knick knacks by recipe.  Sometimes I would get the veggies confused. Don’t judge me.  You would be surprised at how similar some lettuces look.

Hello Fresh does a good job of separating ingredients by individual boxes.

With that said, for your viewing pleasure I unboxed my Blue Apron box in it’s entirety so you can see what it all looks like.  Please see picture below:

You will use your recipe cards to determine what veggies, knick knacks, and meat you will need for your meal.

Blue Apron Review Tip: Before you start cooking find all of the ingredients for the recipe you are cooking, and lay them out so they are each easily and immediately accessible for when the recipe calls to use them.

Below is an image of the ingredients you can expect to find in the brown paper bag knick knacks that you see pictured among the ingredients above.  These ingredients for this particular recipe include: butter, and a pork chop spice blend.

Let’s get cookin!

The instructions are such that you follow step by step.  Each image on the recipe sheet is accompanied by a few tasks.   I am horrible at time management, so I find this to be extraordinarily helpful.  Not to mention, pictures are a huge help and assist for figuring out what exactly it is that you need to be doing, and what you need to be doing it to.

Blue Apron Ingredients

To give you an idea of the size of the meat, because I know for most people the meat is the most important part of the meal, I have taken a picture of the pork chops alongside a sharpie pen for a point of reference.  I feel like most people use sharpies, right?  Hopefully this is helpful to some people.

Pork Chops

To be perfectly honest, I think the portions offered by Blue Apron are quite adequate;  they are enough to fill you up, but not enough to make you feel over-stuffed.  My fiance is about 6’2 /190lbs and eats a lot.  He even found the portions to be very satisfying, so I would say the portions are good.

And finally!  The final product for two:

Some final thoughts and remarks from our experience with Blue Apron Review:

PROS:

1.  I am terrible at time management.  Every time I cook without the assistance of a pre-prepped meal, my asparagus is done early, my rice is down 20 minutes after my asparagus, and my meat is a wild card.  It could be the first, and it could be the last.

I find that Blue Apron really helps with time management and getting everything out and done around roughly the same time, so A+ for this.

2.  Portions are very satisfying.  I am 5’7 and 130 and my fiance is 6’2 and 190 lbs, and the portions were completely adequate and satisfying.  We weren’t left hungry and we weren’t too full.

3.  The meals kept us guessing.  We were NEVER bored, and it really got us out of our comfort zone from what we were eating to what we were bringing to cook with in our kitchen.

4.  The level of difficulty was never something I was concerned or burdened with in the kitchen.  Some were easier than others, but none that I had any difficulty with.

5.  The quality of the meats and vegetables were good.  They weren’t extraordinary, but they were absolutely the kind of quality and freshness you would get if shopping at your local grocery store.

CONS:

1.  Where’s the dessert?  As an American I have grown accustomed to rewarding myself with chocolatey or sugary goodness after each big meal.  I know this sounds silly, but I think that adding a dessert option could bode well for these meals.

Maybe this was an option and I missed it.  But I definitely missed having dessert.

2.  Where are the serving options?  I think Blue Apron would fare well to have more serving size options.  I would really love to have the option of serving 6+ people for maybe a dinner party or when I have family over.  It would be fun to wow them with my new-found cooking skills.

3.  Meal number options.  Sometimes 3 meals is too ambitious for the week.  It’s a good goal, but not always feasible with our schedules.  I wish there were options to have 2 meals for 2 people.

4.  I try and eat organic.  There doesn’t seem to be an organic option.  With organic gaining in popularity due to some concerns, I think it would be a nice option to have organic ingredients, even if the cost is a little higher.

5.  Is it Kosher?  I have a friends who eat strictly kosher, and I did not see any labeling or options for kosher.  This would also be a nice option to have, in my opinion.

Well, that about wraps up my thoughts and feedback regarding the Blue Apron Review and experience.

I have stopped and started using it a few times because I am not always home or in town to use the service consistently, so the start and stop option and flexibility is nice to have.

I would absolutely recommend using Blue Apron, or at the very least giving it a try to see if it is right for you. Blue Apron usually has first-time user offers, so sign up for the newsletter or go to their website at BlueApron.com.
